How To Disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) On Mac M1 and Here’s Why!
SIP or System Integrity Protection System is starting to be discussed a lot by Macbook users, especially by Apple Macbook users with the M1 chipset, even though this system was first introduced in El Capitan OS. According to Apple, with this SIP, Apple limits access to root storage and also limits what actions can be taken to protect files and components on the Apple Macbook.
Which is where before Apple uses SIP, the user will be given access to the root file, in other words the user is not restricted in access. Of course this will allow root access on MacOS to be easily modified.
Is it Safe to Disable System Integrity Protection
According to Apple, by disabling SIP, our MacOS no longer has protection from activities that can damage Apple Macbook components. For example, when we want to install software that we downloaded illegally, it is very possible if the software contains malware or maybe the software is corrupt.
Disabling SIP can also make MacOS more vulnerable to malware that can come from anywhere. One of them can be from the software that we download from a web browser.
So in essence, it is also recommended by Apple to leave SIP active, that way your MacOS will always avoid activities that can damage Apple components.
Why People Disabling Their System Integrity Protection?
-
Third-party Application
Since the M1 chipset was first introduced in Apple Macbook Air, Pro and Mac Mini products, many users have been affected by the limited applications that are compatible with the M1 chipset. Therefore, many users of the M1 chipset are looking for ways to run applications for free by installing them through third-party applications, where if you want to install applications from the internet, the user must first disable SIP.
-
Root Access
Many users also disable SIP just to gain access to the root files on their MacOS. By disabling SIP the user can modify the files contained in the root file easily without any restrictions caused by SIP.
How To Disable System Integrity Protection (SIP)
By default SIP on MacOS is enabled. Then here's how to disable SIP on your MacOS M1 chipset:
- Restart your laptop then press the power button (Touch ID) until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
- After you select the options, select Utilities and run the terminal.
- Then enter the code csrutil disable to disable your SIP and press Y to continue the process.
- After you enter the password and the process is complete then you can immediately restart the laptop by removing the terminal and on the apple menu press restart.
Your M1 is now running without SIP protection.
